On July 10th, 2025, in Barcelona, ECO-eNET’s Professor Paolo Monti, Chalmers University, participated in the FutuRe Optical NeTworking (FRONT) Workshop 2025, contributing to a conversation about the technologies shaping the future of optical networking.
Held in conjunction with the ICTON Conference, the FRONT Workshop brought together leading researchers and industry experts to explore how fixed network architectures can evolve to support the demands of the coming decade from ubiquitous AI clusters to the rollout of 6G infrastructure.
Paolo delivered a presentation titled “Reimagining the Access Edge,” which explored new approaches to integrating optical and radio technologies at the network edge. His talk highlighted how advanced access architectures can deliver on the promise of high-capacity, intelligent, and sustainable broadband for future service demands.
This year’s workshop focused on a range of cutting-edge topics, including:
- Optical communication systems for AI clusters and data centers
- Optical x-haul for 6G and next-generation FTTx
- Optical interconnects for short-reach, high-performance applications
- Optical signal processing for next-generation transceivers
The FRONT Workshop’s mission aligns closely with ECO-eNET’s vision: to pioneer foundational technologies for converged, intelligent, and scalable edge networks. Paolo’s participation showcased how ECO-eNET is helping to define the research agenda for next-generation communication infrastructure.
