ECO-eNET at ICTON 2025: Showcasing Research in Optical Network

From July 6th to 10th, 2025, ECO-eNET researchers were in Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain, for ICTO 2025 (International Conference on Technologies & Organization). This major event focused on reimagining information systems (IS) research and practice amid rapid digital transformation and societal change. Central themes included building resilient digital infrastructures, fostering equitable technological solutions, and promoting the ethical integration of emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, IoT, and the metaverse.

ECO-eNET’s contributions aligned seamlessly with these goals, showcasing forward-looking approaches in networking and communications:

  • Professor Paolo Monti, Chalmers University, presented “Natural Language Interpretability for ML-Based QoT Estimation via Large Language Models,” exploring how LLMs can improve the transparency of machine learning models used for Quality of Transmission predictions.

  •  Carlos Natalino, Chalmers University, introduced the “Optical Networking Gym: scenarios for machine learning research in optical networks,” an open and experimental framework designed to drive innovation in this space.

  • Sai Vikranth Pendem, Chalmers University, shared insights on “Hybrid FSO–THz Technologies for 6G Access Networks: A Cost-Availability Trade-off Analysis,” contributing to the exploration of future access technologies that will underpin next-generation networks.

ICTO 2025 offered a dynamic platform where the convergence of emerging technologies and societal values took center stage. ECO-eNET’s active presence reflects its dedication to crafting sustainable, inclusive, and intelligent network infrastructures that align with Europe’s digital transformation agenda.
