ECO-eNET Researchers Showcase Innovative Work at OFC 2025

The ECO-eNET team is proud to be represented at OFC 2025 – the premier global conference for optical communications and networking professionals – with multiple contributions that reflect the project’s mission to develop converged, sustainable, and intelligent network technologies for future 6G systems.

Acknowledging ECO-eNET Support

A poster presentation by Markos Anastasopoulos, Jesús Gutiérrez, and Anna Tzanakaki directly acknowledges ECO-eNET funding:

Title: Optical Transport Network Optimization Supporting Integrated Sensing and Communication Services
This work explores how optical transport networks can be optimised to support emerging use cases in integrated sensing and communications—a central theme of the ECO-eNET project.

Other Highlights from ECO-eNET Researchers

In addition to directly funded work, several ECO-eNET researchers are involved in high-impact contributions at OFC 2025. While these papers were not submitted under the project, they reflect the strong expertise and collaboration across the ECO-eNET community:

  • QoT Estimation With Margin-Driven Transfer Learning in Time-Varying Optical Networks
    Presenter: Piotr Lechowicz
Collaborators: Carlos Natalino and Paolo Monti
    Session: Monday, March 31 | M1J.5
This paper introduces a machine learning approach to Quality of Transmission (QoT) estimation in dynamic optical environments.

  • AI/ML-Based State-of-Polarization Monitoring in Optical Networks: Concepts and Challenges (Invited)
    Presenter: Lena Wosinska
Collaborators: Leyla Sadighi, Carlos Natalino, Stefan Karlsson, Marco Ruffini, Devika Dass, and Marija Furdek
    Session: Monday, March 31 | M3F.6
This invited talk explores how artificial intelligence can enable more resilient and adaptive optical networks by tracking the state of polarization in real-time.

Insights from Real-World Network Monitoring

ECO-eNET researcher Kaida Zeng presents findings in poster format from a six-month telemetry study of a live, pan-European network:

Title: Exploring Telemetry Collection Interval and Continuity in a Six-Month Study of a Pan-European Network
The research offers practical insights into data collection practices and long-term observability in operational fibre networks.

Top-Scoring Paper on Hybrid Optical–Wireless Integration

Dr Devika Dass, a Research Fellow with the CONNECT Centre at Trinity College Dublin and key contributor to ECO-eNET, is presenting one of the top-scoring papers at OFC 2025:

Title: Coexistence of Digital Coherent, MmWave and sub-THz Analogue RoF Services Using OSaaS Over Converged Access-Metro Live Production Network
Session: Optical–Wireless Integration (Tu2A)
Time: 31 March 2025, 16:30 – 16:45
This work demonstrates the successful coexistence of digital coherent and analogue radio-over-fibre signals at mmWave and sub-THz frequencies across a live metro network using Optical Spectrum-as-a-Service (OSaaS) technology. The experiment involved collaboration with Dublin City University, HEAnet, and ECO-eNET Principal Investigators Prof. Marco Ruffini and Prof. Daniel Kilper.
