ECO-eNET present at FYUZ24: “The Next Step Beyond Convergence”

ECO-eNET team members,–Paolo Monti, Simon Pryor, Dimitra Simeonidou and  Marco Ruffini– recently took to the stage at FYUZ24 to explore the future of converged and confluent networks. Speaking on a panel titled “The Next Step Beyond Convergence,” they shared insights into how the convergence of open RAN, optical, and wireless technologies can transform telecom infrastructure and drive efficiency, sustainability, and adaptability in next-generation networks.

Dimitra Simeonidou from the University of Bristol highlighted the concept of “confluence,” where technologies harmonise and optimise across multiple network layers. She emphasised that integrating optical and wireless systems enables flexible configurations and real-time adaptability, a significant leap from traditional static architectures. This vision for confluence reflects ECO-eNET’s commitment to advancing edge networks that serve diverse 6G applications.

Simon Pryor, specialising in open RAN solutions, discussed how dynamic and disaggregated RAN elements can improve energy efficiency and network responsiveness. He emphasised that aligning RAN and transport networks dynamically can lead to more sustainable systems by responding to network demands in real time.

Professor Marco Ruffini added that the true potential of confluent networks lies in “freeing the optics” and breaking artificial boundaries in transmission. By allowing photons to flow seamlessly, he argued, confluent networks could harness the full potential of optical technology, drastically reducing energy consumption by minimising the need for electronic conversion.

ECO-eNET’s project team envisage a future where networks can rapidly adapt to new technologies, paving the way for intelligent, integrated solutions that not only enhance performance but also lower the environmental footprint of global telecommunications.
